General Elections 2020
I'm not one to go into politics much, so I'll keep this short.
The General Elections just happened in Singapore, with the ruling party since independence, People's Action Party (PAP), winning supermajority as usual, but with a bigger percentage of opposition (mostly from Worker's Party or WP) taking up seats in parliament.
My post today isn't about PAP or WP or politics in general, really. My post is about all the rather petty complaints I've heard from my fellow Singaporeans throughout the course of this election.
I just want to say this: Until you've lived in another country, and I mean actually LIVED, settled down - not just worked overseas or studied overseas, you will not understand how good you have it back home. Complaints about housing being too expensive for this generation to afford - Singapore is a city-state, go to any city in the world, the prices will match. Complaints about taxes being too high - please find out the taxes in other countries and you will see such a great difference. Complaints about foreigners taking our jobs... do you have any idea how xenophobic you sound? Singapore has such stringent rules about hiring foreigners, it would be 10 million times easier to hire Singaporeans - but if no one suitable applies, what do you expect employers to do?
The MRT, the shelters everywhere, the parks around every corner (despite lack of space!), everything just being so damn convenient... you will not understand, if you have not been away from it.
Just remember this - the grass always looks greener on the other side. Doesn't mean it actually is.
